Size Guide Page
Not sure what size fixture you need? Use this guide to find the perfect fit for every room in your home.
1. Room Chandelier Sizing
The easiest way to find the right chandelier size for a room:
The Formula:
Room Length (ft) + Room Width (ft) = Fixture Diameter (inches)
Example: A 12 ft × 14 ft room → 12 + 14 = 26-inch fixture
| Room Size | Recommended Fixture Width |
|---|---|
| 10 ft × 10 ft | 20 inches |
| 12 ft × 12 ft | 24 inches |
| 12 ft × 14 ft | 26 inches |
| 14 ft × 16 ft | 30 inches |
| 16 ft × 18 ft | 34 inches |
| 18 ft × 20 ft | 38 inches |
2. Dining Table Fixture Sizing
For fixtures hung directly over a dining table:
- Fixture width should be 1/2 to 2/3 the width of the table
- For round tables: fixture diameter = 1/2 the table diameter
- Leave at least 6 inches of clearance on each side of the table
| Table Width | Recommended Fixture Width |
|---|---|
| 30 inches | 15 – 20 inches |
| 36 inches | 18 – 24 inches |
| 42 inches | 21 – 28 inches |
| 48 inches | 24 – 32 inches |
3. Hanging Height Guide
How high should your fixture hang? It depends on where it's placed:
| Location | Height (bottom of fixture to surface/floor) |
|---|---|
| Over dining table | 30 – 36 inches above table |
| Over kitchen island | 30 – 36 inches above counter |
| Living room / bedroom | 7 feet minimum clearance from floor |
| Foyer / entryway | 7 feet minimum (higher for two-story) |
| Stairwell | Center at the second-floor level |
Tip: For ceilings higher than 8 feet, add 3 inches of hanging height for every additional foot of ceiling height.
4. Kitchen Island Pendants
Spacing and sizing for pendants over a kitchen island:
- Use 2 pendants for islands 4–6 ft long
- Use 3 pendants for islands 7–9 ft long
- Space pendants 24 – 30 inches apart (center to center)
- Keep pendants 6 inches in from each end of the island
- Pendant width: 6 – 12 inches for most kitchen islands
5. Foyer & Entryway
Your entryway sets the first impression — size it right:
- Fixture width: 1/3 to 1/2 the width of the doorway or foyer
- For two-story foyers: the fixture should fill 2/3 of the vertical space
- Minimum clearance: 7 feet from floor to bottom of fixture
- For narrow hallways: consider flush or semi-flush mounts instead
6. Bathroom Vanity Lighting
For balanced, shadow-free lighting at your vanity:
| Vanity Width | Recommended Fixture |
|---|---|
| Up to 30 inches | One light bar (24 inches) or sconce pair |
| 36 – 48 inches | Light bar (30–36 inches) or 2 sconces |
| 60+ inches (double vanity) | Two light bars or 3 sconces |
Tip: Vanity light fixtures should be about 75% the width of your mirror. Side-mounted sconces should be at eye level (about 65 inches from the floor).
